Man Accused Over Ute Incident Tells Reporters Outside Court He Is Open To Reality TV Offers, Still Yet To Enter A Plea
WESTERN AUSTRALIA — "I'm officially open for business if you are seeking a casting." That is what 30-year-old Jake Smith told reporters on the steps of a Western Australian magistrates court, where he is facing a reckless driving charge and has not yet entered a plea.
Smith is accused of allowing an unrestrained three-year-old to steer his ute in September. He represented himself in court this week and told the magistrate that prosecutors are withholding digital records from his phone. The magistrate told him he is not entitled to any further material unless he pleads not guilty.
Outside court, Smith said earlier publicity had ruined his job prospects and forced him to rethink his next career move. He named reality shows as where he would like to land and said he would do anything for a spot. On the charge itself he said he would not be speaking about it because it is before the courts, and that he would "let Jesus handle it."
He returns to court next month. The magistrate warned that if he fails to enter a plea again, the court will enter a not guilty plea on his behalf, which would clear the way for a trial. The charge is an allegation only and has not been tested in court.
Smith signed off the same way he started: he will see the court next month.
