How to Become a Concrete Pump Operator in Australia (2026 Guide)

Guides

What the operator does: runs the equipment moving concrete from truck through pipeline/boom to the pour — part driver, part hydraulics tech, part traffic controller. Two types: line pump operator (ground-level, hose work, residential/commercial) and boom pump operator (truck-mounted hydraulic boom, large slabs, high-rise).

Licences/tickets: White Card (Construction Induction, ~$50–80); Heavy Rigid (HR) truck licence (some big booms need HC); CPCCLBM3001 "Licence to operate a concrete placing boom"; Working at Heights / Confined Spaces as needed; First Aid expected.

Career path: Labourer/2IC/boomhand (Yr 0–2) → Line pump operator (Yr 1–3) → Boom operator (Yr 3+) → Owner-operator (Yr 5+ with capital).

Earnings (AUD/yr, 2026): Boomhand/labourer $65k–85k · Line operator $90k–110k · Boom operator $110k–140k+ · Owner-operator (1 line pump) variable, strong years $200k+. NSW/QLD pay strongest; WA tracks resources; VIC steady/mid.

Getting hired: show up at the yard early with a CV; get White Card + HR first; be the bloke who turns up early, never complains about washouts, asks questions at smoko.

Gear: steel-caps, hi-vis, sun protection, gloves, a hat that won't fly off, splash/stretch-built clothes (shop plug). Warning: rewards consistency, respect, grit; chews up corner-cutters. "Welcome in. Earn it."
